The USCAA National Championships were held August 5-6, 2000 in Renton Memorial Stadium, near Seattle, Washington.
I ran an 800 meters leg in the preliminary Executive Relay on Saturday in 2:58, and a 75 second 400 meters leg in the President's Relay final on Sunday. Since I had estimated I could run 3:00 for 800 and 79 seconds for 400, I felt I had done my part, even though we didn't make it into the final in the Executive Relay, and I slipped from 3rd to 4th in the President's Relay. We still scored points for the team. And since our team won third place overall by 1 point, I guess it counted.
We flew out Thursday night after work. Friday morning we went with Kim and Liane to see the stadium, track and the road race courses, and learn the way to and from the venue. Then we had a little breakfast, got our race packets, and went downtown sightseeing. We had lunch outdoors at Ivar's Acres of Clams, and thought about taking a ferry ride. We decided to just walk through the Pike Street Market and tried the beer at The Pike Brewery there. Then back to Renton for the team dinner and an early night.
Saturday started with the 5K, and our men's team won the gold. Then a day full of mostly preliminary relays on the track. After my race, I was a volunteer assistant timer for the rest of the day. We had a nice dinner and again went to bed early.
Sunday started with the 10K. Then finals the rest of the day. Our former team captain was inducted into the hall of fame. I ran well, and we went shopping for team captain gifts. Then the meet was over, and back to the hot tub, then on to the awards banquet.
